Narendra Modi chosen as NDA 3.0 leader; likely to take oath as Prime Minister on June 8

After the election results yesterday, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance parties met today in New Delhi and chose Narendra Modi as their leader. “We unanimously choose Narendra Modi as our leader,” a proposal signed by 21 NDA members read.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu were also present in the meeting. “There should not be any delay in forming the government. We should do it as soon as possible,” sources quoted Nitish Kumar as saying in the meet. Modi is likely to take oath as the Prime Minister for the 3rd time on June 7.
More than 640 million votes were counted in the elections. The NDA won 292 Lok Sabha seats while the Congress-led INDIA got 232 seats. The BJP suffered a setback as they got 240 seats, 63 less from their 2019 tally of 303. Since it could not achieve 272+ seats, the BJP has to rely on its allies to form a government. Meanwhile, INDIA’s Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress emerged victorious in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal respectively. Samajwadi Party won 37 seats, the Trinamool Congress secured 29, 7 higher than its 2019 tally of 22. Smriti Irani, BJP’s prominent politician, lost from Amethi. It’s going to be mixed parliament this time as no party has complete majority. Rahul Gandhi won in both the Rae Bareli and Wayanad constituencies with over 3 lakh votes.
