PM Narendra Modi leaves for Italy for G7 Summit; to focus on AI, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean

PM Narendra Modi left for Italy to attend the outreach session for G7 Summit. He was invited by his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni. This is his first overseas visit in his third term.

“During the discussions at the outreach session, the focus would be on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. It will be an opportunity to bring greater synergy between the outcomes of the G20 Summit held under India’s presidency and the forthcoming G7 Summit, and deliberate on issues which are crucial for the Global South,” Modi said in a statement before his departure from New Delhi.

He added, “I am also looking forward to meeting other leaders participating in the summit.”

Recalling his 2021 visit, Modi wrote, “I warmly recall my visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021. Prime Minister Meloni’s two visits to India last year were instrumental in infusing momentum and depth in our bilateral agenda.”

Modi is expected to have bilateral interactions with several world leaders, including US President Joe Biden.

Apart from Modi, the leaders of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Tunisia and Türkiye have been invited to the outreach session.

The G-7 summit will be held in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13 to 15. It is likely to be dominated by the raging war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to take a session on the Russian invasion of his country.
